Why a Preset and Not a Save Game?

Presets may be a scrap more work for the 1 making the mod, but they are better for the player and the game itself in the long run.

Even Bethesda has said that there is no such thing every bit a "clean save." Mods can no longer be popped in and out at will without issues as they could in Morrowind and Oblivion. Large mods and scripts, fifty-fifty when stopped, stay present on a save game until the finish of time, causing potential problems down the road for anyone downloading the character you wish to share. Why? The leftover stuff from any mods you had installed will still be there in the save.

Information technology'south time for the modding community to move onto improve, more sophisticated ways of sharing content. Hence the preset plugin. This blazon of minor mod tin exist removed easily without whatever awful side effects to your game.

With a preset, the people who download your modernistic tin do whatever they want—from applying the look in ShowRaceMenu to starting a new game from scratch looking similar your character. The bottom line: fewer restrictions and fewer issues from save game residuum.

What You Volition Need

- The Skyrim Cosmos Kit (I'll be using patch 1.8)

- Some knowledge about how to work the kit on your own

Getting Started

tut_charplugins

Open up the Cosmos Kit. Make sure to run the program as an Ambassador to avert problems down the road.

Y'all can gear up the Cosmos Kit to open as Administrator every time past choosing Properties from the drop-down menu, navigating to the Compatibility tab in the Properties window, and checking the box labeled Run this Program as Administrator.

The Creation Kit volition take a few seconds to open. Once it does, go to File in the height-left corner, and cull Information from the driblet-downward list. Check Skyrim.esm and Update.esm, then hitting OK and let the Creation Kit load. This may accept a while. If the Creation Kit encounters any errors, hit Aye or Ignore. This is normal and doesn't mean annihilation is incorrect.

For hereafter reference, if you always want to edit your mod again, check Skyrim.esm and Update.esm in the data window, and then choose your mod file in the window and brand sure that it is set up as the Active File.

The next affair to practice is salve your mod. Navigate to File in the top left, where you merely were, and choose Save from the drop-down menu. Requite your mod a clearly descriptive proper name. I can't emphasize this point strongly enough. When people name their mods ambiguously, it'due south really annoying.

When you are finished saving, get out out of your Creation Kit. I named my modernistic Solding_CharPreset for the graphic symbol I am going to be sharing. Any you named your mod, y'all need to go to the mod director you are using, whether it exist the launcher or the Nexus Mod Manager, and uncheck your mod in the load order. There is no point in having an empty mod enabled.

Making an NPC File for Reference

Now, commencement upwards Skyrim. Create a character that y'all would like to share, or open your old save. Make sure that you are out of the ShowRaceMenu. You lot can decide whether or not to save your game subsequently this; it doesn't really matter in the m scheme of things.

Once you have your grapheme looking like how y'all want the preset to look, hit the tilde key, otherwise known every bit "~", and blazon "SPF YOURCHARNAME", of class substituting the "YOURCHARNAME" for the proper noun of your graphic symbol.

This volition generate a file in your Skyrim installation binder called "YOURCHARNAME.NPC". Nosotros are going to utilize this to brand the face up of the preset. Subsequently we are done, don't delete the .NPC file. You can utilise it to make followers with the preset's look, give NPCs the preset look, etc. I generally tend to include mine in my mods just in case anyone wants it.

Making a Placeholder Histrion

tut_charplugins

Now, reopen the Cosmos Kit. Go to "Information..." and reopen your mod using the method I described in a higher place (with the active file push). When everything is loaded and the errors are dismissed, go to the object window (the window on the left of the CK with things like "Actors", "Audio", and "Character" written in information technology, and expand the Actors category.

Expand the second Actor category, right-click on the right set of boxes where all the names of the NPCs are, and choose "New" from the drib-down menu. This should create a new NPC and open the NPC editor window. In the Object Window, your new NPC should have a fiddling star next to their Count, which should ALWAYS be 0. If it isn't 0, you've done something wrong.

Nosotros aren't really going to be introducting this actor to the world of Skyrim; they are a "placeholder" actor that the Vanilla race uses as a reference.

tut_charplugins

In the Actor window, we're going to practice a few things—kickoff, give your placeholder actor a unique formID. Putting "1_YOURFORMID" (in other words, a 1_ in front of your ID) will put the actor at the top of the Actor'southward window so that they can hands exist found.

We don't need to do much to this window. You tin can get away with leaving the Name and Curt Name empty, but I like to fill it in so it can be searched in the Creation Kit. In the Traits tab, make certain to ready the actor'south Race to the race of your character, and cheque the box if they are female; leave it empty if your preset is male.

In one case you have done that, go to the "Grapheme Gen Parts" tab. You may take to click the arrow pointing to the right at the very peak right of the Histrion window to get to it.

The CharGenParts window is pretty ugly, but at that place is only 1 thing that we want here—that's the Import button. You should save your mod before going any further.

When you've saved, hit that push, navigate to your .NPC file with your character proper name, and open it with the Cosmos Kit. It will automatically put the face on your graphic symbol. Check to encounter if information technology worked by ticking the "Head" Checkbox at the very bottom of this window—a preview of your grapheme's face up volition appear on the right.

Once that is washed, close the Thespian window and save your modernistic again.

Setting the Thespian as a Preset

At present, the final step of this tutorial. Go back to the object window, expand the "Character" dropdown on the left, and open up the Race category. Find the Race of your character (aforementioned proper name y'all put in the Actors window adjacent to the gender of your character) and double click on it to open it.

Go to the Presets tab, and tick the advisable gender checkbox on the tiptop correct of the window. Then, elevate your placeholder actor into the Races preset window and so that it looks something like the screenshot below. If y'all striking the head checkbox now, your confront volition not show—instead, it volition bear witness the default face for the race. This is normal. Get out out of the Race window and salve your mod. At present yous can go out the Creation Kit.

Washed!

tut_charplugins

The only thing yous need to exercise now is re-enable your mod in your Mod Manager and check to see if the results in-game are equally expected. If you lot see your grapheme'southward face at the end of your presets for the right race and gender, and then you have succeeded and you are prepare to distribute your mod.

If non, then something has gone wrong along the way. Yous don't have to start from scratch; just go over and second check the steps once more in the Creation Kit, and make certain your modern is at the bottom of the load social club.

Be a Good Modder: Compatibility With Other Mods

If installed alongside any other mods that edit race, this new modernistic yous have created may cause crashes. The modern makes ane small change to the original race, which tin create conflicts if y'all utilise mods that make changes to information technology equally well. It can't be avoided.

However, the strength of this blazon of mod is that it can exist installed and and then removed. One time you save your game, the character'southward appearance is saved as well, and then you no longer need the mod enabled. That means that if something is incompatible yous can temporarily uninstall and reinstall it after y'all are done with the graphic symbol cosmos screen.

Make sure that the people who download your mod are enlightened of this so that they don't break their game. That'southward what being a good modder is all about.

So, if I use mods like RaceMenu, practice I need to have it selected equally a master file forth with the ones mentioned here? I followed the directions to make my Argonian a preset so I don't have to keep remaking her, simply trying to test it out doesn't accept her displaying properly. I can meet an Argonian that is supposed to be her, but her colors are completely incorrect. I also seem to accept lost a preset added by some other mod I use even though I didn't bear on annihilation that had to practise with that other modernistic.

Dragonslayer on July 06, 2015:

@CaptainCookieMuncher its because the Kit doesn't support ECE or Racemenu. There are other ways to make presets using the mentioned mods, simply I only know how to practise that with Racemenu.

CaptainCookieMuncher on June 21, 2015:

my preset of a sudden get ugly in the brandish head at CharGenParts, but then when i choose the preset in the game information technology'due south fine but there are a little bit of changes (like olfactory organ blazon, jaw width, mouth size, etc) i have enhanced char edit installed.. but i don't think information technology is the trouble.

Anyone knows what is it? delight...

ASkyrimModder on July 09, 2014:

You should check the checkbox that says Unique nether where

y'all name your preset.

Creation Kit User on May 14, 2014:

Hey, I know this is a really sometime article, but I was wondering if you could reply a question for me: Once yous loaded your preset, did you find your grapheme's face on the generic homo enemies in your game? Bully commodity, by the way.
